Denise Kleiner, past vice president and director, founded the Old Braden River
Historical Society, Inc. Although she had lived on the river for only 3 ½ years,
she developed a deep desire to encourage residents to help preserve the history
and environmental quality of the area. To get started, she made flyers and
distributed them to the residents of Marineland, the development along the
stretch of river where she lives. The first meeting was held in May 2007.
The mission of this society shall be to help conserve the beauty and natural
environment of the Braden River and to research, document and publicize the
history of the communities and families in and around the Braden River
watershed.
Denise conceived our motto, "In order to honor the past we need to protect what
remains". We define "what remains" to include all aspects of this area. The
Society is focused not only on preserving buildings and places but also on
protecting the environment. Our activities are as varied as supporting the
construction of a replica historic cabin at Jiggs Landing Preserve, removing
trash from the Braden River three times each year, participating in
E-Fest and holding
fund-raising events such as a block party.
One of our first actions was to incorporate and to obtain nonprofit status. We
hold monthly
meetings. We
always need new members. If you love the charm of our area and want to keep this slice of
Old Florida for future generations, please come to the next meeting and
volunteer for one of the committees and give us your thoughts. If you are
interested in getting involved, we need people who like to research local
history or get out on the beautiful Braden River and help with cleanups. If you
don't have time to devote to these activities you can make a donation.
