jiggs landing - history

In 1943, Alphonso "Jiggs" Metcalf and his wife, Agnes, paid to have land cleared prior to buying what was to become Jiggs Landing Fish Camp on the Braden River. In 1944, Jiggs and Agnes bought the land and began developing the fish camp. Jiggs acquired lumber from an old school house and built three cabins (pictured right). The cabins were rented to folks who came to fish and were also used by employees. Jiggs later added a screened porch in the front and a bathroom and kitchen in the rear.

The picture to the left shows one of the cabins in later years and prior to the fish camp closing. Manatee County acquired Jiggs Landing in 2005 and is developing a county park. A replica of one of the cabins will be built at the park located on Evers Reservoir at the corner of Linger Lodge Road and Braden River Road. The cabin will become a small museum and a link to the history of the area and the Braden River watershed. You can join the effort. Please see our contact information.
